sevDesk is the most visible of the cloud-native German SMB ledgers. Built in Offenburg and now part of the Main Capital portfolio, the product targets freelancers, solo entrepreneurs, and small businesses with a combination of invoicing, bookkeeping, and DATEV-export capability. Feature velocity has been high since 2023: automatic receipt categorisation against SKR03 / SKR04, GoBD-compliant archiving, XRechnung and ZUGFeRD 2.x generation, native handling of the 2025 e-invoicing receiving mandate, and ELSTER-integrated VAT filing.

Autonomy at sevDesk is meaningfully higher than at DATEV for the SMB segment — most routine transactions are auto-booked and most outgoing invoices are generated as structured e-invoices without user action — but sevDesk has been careful not to overstate agentic claims in a market where the Steuerberater still has sign-off. The product is not a replacement for a Steuerberater workflow; it is designed to make the handoff cleaner.

For a German solo or small business that wants a cloud ledger with modern UX, sevDesk is the default first choice. For a company growing past roughly twenty staff, the conversation usually shifts toward Lexware Office, Dynamics 365 BC, or Sage.
