03Research

Puzzle is the archetype of the AI-native accounting product, purpose-built for venture-backed startups and the accounting firms that serve them. The product focuses on metrics that investor-backed companies actually care about — burn rate, runway, ARR, budget-vs-actuals — and wraps the general ledger in an agentic layer that handles routine categorization and close tasks without human confirmation for a meaningful portion of transactions.

The 2026 release of "AI Close for Firms" is the clearest signal of where Puzzle is heading: it lets outsourced accounting teams configure their own close agents using natural-language prompts, meaning the same workflow that used to require a senior bookkeeper now runs against a library of firm-built agents. This is a real shift — it's not AI sprinkled on top of a legacy ledger, it's a ledger designed around agent control.

Weak spots are honest: Puzzle is US-only and has near-zero coverage of non-US compliance (no meaningful VAT, no Peppol, no non-USD banking). Pricing is opaque past the entry tier. Integrations are strong with Stripe / Plaid / Gusto / Mercury but thinner with enterprise ERPs.
