03Research

DATEV is not a software company in the ordinary sense. It is a registered cooperative (eingetragene Genossenschaft) owned by its Steuerberater and Wirtschaftsprüfer members, with tens of thousands of participating tax-advisory practices and a product suite — DATEV Unternehmen online, DATEV Rechnungswesen, DATEV Mittelstand Faktura, DATEV LODAS — that collectively acts as the central nervous system of German bookkeeping. Any credible ranking of German accounting tools that does not start with DATEV is wrong; the SMB's ledger can be almost anything, but the Steuerberater on the other end is almost certainly on DATEV, and the monthly DATEV-format export is the real interface.

The agentic story at DATEV is deliberately measured. DATEV KI, the cooperative's AI line, has shipped features across document classification (Belegbilderkennung), automated booking-proposal generation, duplicate detection, and natural-language queries over practice data since 2024. The posture is conservative in the same way QuickBooks' is — the downside of a confidently-wrong autonomous entry in a Steuerberater's book of record is catastrophic — so autonomy sits well below what sevDesk or Candis ship. Coverage, accuracy, and traction, on the other hand, are extreme.

For the German buyer the practical question is not whether to use DATEV but in what role: ledger, export destination, or both. The 2025–2028 e-invoicing mandate is landing squarely on DATEV's strengths, and the cooperative's distribution moat is genuinely unmatched. If one tool in this index is almost impossible to displace in its home market, it is this one.
